Characteristics of Peridotite
Many rocks have distinct characteristics. Some of the Properties of Peridotite are hardness, structure, streak, fracture etc. Peridotite is significant as it is composed of minerals and has variety of uses in our day to day life. The characteristics of Peridotite plays an important role in its identification.
The hardness of Peridotite is 5.5-6 on Moh’s hardness scale. Rocks according to their hardness are divided into:Types of Hard Rocks, Types of Soft Rocks and Rocks with Medium Hardness.
Fracture of Peridotite rock is irregular. Its specific heat capacity is 1.26 kJ/Kg K. Peridotite is heat resistant, pressure resistant, wear resistant. Some of its uses are:
- Interior Uses: Decorative aggregates and Interior decoration.
- Construction Industry: As dimension stone, Cobblestones.

More About Peridotite
Peridotite is a type of Igneous Rocks. The color of rock is one of its important property. Peridotite rock is available in dark greenish - grey colors. It is Rough and Shiny in appearance. The Peridotite mineral content includes Amphibole, Chromite, Garnet, Magnesium, Olivine, Phlogopite, Plagioclase, Pyroxene. Its compound content includes Ca, Fe, Mg, Potassium, Silicon Dioxide, Sodium, Titanium Dioxide. Let’s move on to the types of Peridotite. The types of Peridotite include Dunite, Wehrlite, Harzburgite, Lherzolite and Pyrolite.
Fossils are the remains of prehistoric plants or animals which are embedded in rock and preserved in petrified form. Fossils are found only in sedimentary rocks. As Peridotite belongs to Igneous Rocks, fossils are not found in it.
