Oolite Formation

Oolite formation took place millions of years ago. There are a variety of Oolite Uses and the Oolite Reserves are found in many countries around the world. The rocks in the earth’s crust continuously undergo changes in their composition which leads to formation of other rocks. Each rock has a unique formation process. Formation of Oolite is explained below:

  • Oolites form when layers of calcite are deposited around a sand grain or fossil piece and are rolled around in calm water, which makes them round.

Along with Oolite Formation, also learn about Oolite composition and transformation in the next section.

Oolite Composition

Every rock is composed of one or more minerals. Oolite composition which can be further divided into mineral and compound content. The Oolite mineral content includes Calcite, Chert, Clay, Dolomite, Quartz, Sand, Silt. Its compound content includes Aluminium Oxide, Ca, NaCl, CaO, Iron(III) Oxide, FeO, MgO. Transformation of Oolite

Every rock on earth undergoes transformation process. Oolite is a type of Sedimentary Rocks. Transformation of Oolite takes place in three steps- Metamorphism, Weathering and Erosion.

  • Metamorphism of Oolite:- Metamorphism is change in arrangement of minerals and texture in the pre-existing rocks. Oolite rock does not undergo metamorphism. Unlike in formation of Oolite, the rock does not melt into liquid magma.
  • Weathering of Oolite:- The breaking down of rocks when they come in contact with the Earth's atmosphere, ecology and water is called as weathering. Talking about weathering of Oolite, this rock undergoes weathering. Weathering of Igneous rocks leads to formation of Sedimentary rocks. Weathering is further classified as chemical and mechanical weathering. Oolite undergoes biological weathering, chemical weathering and mechanical weathering.
  • Oolite Erosion:- After formation of Oolite, let’s move on to Oolite Erosion. The weathered small fragments of rock are carried from one place to other by a process called erosion. Oolite rock undergoes Erosion. Erosion is one of the important aspects in the life cycle of a rock. Oolite undergoes chemical erosion and coastal erosion.
